The Travelers' Rest Bridge is currently awaiting
the go-ahead for final design. A preliminary analysis
has shown that a traditional suspension bridge
utilizing round, small diameter timber is feasible
in this 140 ft. long structure. These members
will be used in the towers, floor system, and
stiffening trusses. Member connections developed
in BCE's involvement in the Small Diameter Timber
Initiative will be used along with a mechanical
grading system for round timbers. The USDA Forest
Service, Forest Products Laboratory has initiated
the study to develop the technical basis for this
grading system. Along with development of the
timber structure, refinement of bridge alignment
will be done in final design. |
