This project consisted of a combination of both steel framing and open-web wood joist construction. The primary challenges included a unique drive-through configuration for the 1st floor coffee shop that required the vehicles to actually drive through the building instead of around the outside of the building. Other challenges included multiple roof elevations requiring complicated snow drift design and a tall, circular tower composed almost entirely of glass. Large openings along with a desire for maximum flexibility required the use of steel moment frames in some locations, while wood shear walls where utilized elsewhere to save costs.
