The historic Palace Hotel building is located in the heart of downtown Missoula, MT. As a historic building, it was constructed of unreinforced brick masonry walls with wood framed floors and roof, with both 5 and 6 story areas. As you can imagine, our relatively high seismic zone requires that the building go through a structural upgrade to ensure it stands the test of time. The renovation consisted of upgraded floors in conjunction with architectural reconfiguring of the interior spaces for apartments. To address the seismic and wind design requirements, BCE established internal steel frames in the atrium with a new reinforced masonry stair element on the south end of the building.
