Old Faithful Inn

Beaudette Consulting Engineers :: Montana

This national historic landmark is located in Yellowstone National Park, one of the most extreme seismic and snow load areas in the United States. Originally designed by architect Robert Reamer and constructed in 1903-1904, the Old Faithful Inn is an impressive wood structure consisting of both log work and stick-frame construction. BCE is currently working on a complete ’Old House’ restoration with structural design for seismic and gravity load retrofits. The intriguing challenge is to incorporate all of our structural upgrades into the existing structure without aesthetically changing the look. Phase 1 and 2 design and construction have been completed and phase 3 construction is currently underway.

Sears Building — existing building renovation

Location: Butte, MT
Owner: Kujawa Development LLC
Architect: Casimir Kujawa Architecture
Budget: $3.5 million
Structural frame description: existing exterior unreinforced masonry walls. Interior steel post and beam system with wood joists and floor diaphragm. We’ll be adding shear walls and steel braced frames for lateral forces. We’re adding an elevator and stairs which will punch through the existing floor structure, and exterior balconies for the residents. On this project we completed brick shear tests to justify the strength of the URM walls.

Beaudette Consulting Engineers :: Montana

This historic five story warehouse building in the new Great Northern Development in downtown Helena was constructed in the early 1900’s as a concrete frame with un-reinforced masonry and brick infill. It is now being renovated to house a bakery and deli on the main floor, with residential lofts on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th floor. New steel concentric braced frames were added on each level for seismic stability, and a structural reinforced concrete topping slab was added on each level.

Central School Renovation

Location: Kalispell, MT
Architect: James R. McDonald Architects (now A&E Architects)

Beaudette Consulting Engineers :: Montana

Built in 1884, the Central School building in Kalispell, MT has served the community faithfully for 118+ years. After many years of hard use, and nearly 10 years of vacancy, the building was in need of significant restoration, both architecturally and structurally. Beaudette Consulting Engineers teamed together with James R. McDonald Architects (now A&E Architects) et. al. to renovate and restore the original building and to produce "A Museum for the 21st Century". The original brick building with wood floors was upgraded to support increased floor loading from public gatherings in the museum. In addition, the unreinforced masonry walls were reinforced with seismic steel frames to ensure the safety of visitors and staff in the case of a seismic event.
